Music helps promote a better learning environment for students. It is helping them create a peaceful and very focused work and learning environment. Music is a powerful tool when used in the classroom; It can maximize learning and keep students focused without distractions from their peers.

Freshman AJ Houston poses for a photo showing off his earbuds.
“Music soothes my mind; It gets me excited. Listening to music in class helps me gather my thoughts and prepare myself to lock in,” freshman Deondre Bucks said.
“Listening to music in class allows me to stay focused without the distractions of others in my ear. When listening to music, I tend to work at a faster pace and get my work done in a timely fashion rather than work in complete silence,” freshman AJ Houston said.
With our school having a no-earphone rule, it is hard for students to remain focused by not being able to listen to what keeps them focused. If students could wear earphones in class, it would promote a better learning environment and encourage students to get their work done.
“I would prefer listening to chill music, like TV girl. I’d rather work in a quiet environment unless teachers allow me to play music in my headphones because teachers don’t play the right tune to help me lock in,” Bucks said.
“I think, honestly, the no earphone rule depends on the situation; if you are doing work, then we should be able to put in our earbuds and get to work. If the teachers are giving a lesson, that’s a different story; I believe we should be able to have earbuds outside of lesson time to help students remain focused,” Freshman Terrell Henderson said.
Although some teachers out here strongly believe music plays a part in keeping students focused, how do those students remain focused during classwork in a quiet environment? More importantly, which setting provided a more positive, encouraging student work environment?
“In my opinion, music keeps me going all the time. At home and in school, I turn on Beyonce or a favorite artist, and it’ll just helps me keep on going. More upbeat music keeps me focused because if I listen to the beat, I’ll just keep on working,” Henderson said.
“I believe that music helps me focus. One thing that’s helped me a lot this year is music. It helped me get through my high school work and challenges and also allowed me to remain focused. It has also helped me complete any work in my clubs. Whether staying up at night to get the job done, music allows me to get it all done,” Henderson continued.
