Should earbuds be an issue?

It appears that earbuds/headphones have become a big issue within our school. What do the students think about the ongoing problem inside of Crete-Monee?

“Personally, it helps me focus a lot, letting me get my school work done compared to if I didn’t have them in while doing class work,” Cantave said.
Several students appear to have earbuds/headphones during class and use them mainly to finish work. If this is the case, students with earbuds don’t look to be causing any issues.
“For me, I personally think students who don’t have earbuds in cause more problems or don’t get work done than students with them in. People without them are just horseplaying or talking to their friends instead,” Devyn Lindsey said.
When students aren’t focusing on work, they are doing other things in the classroom that can cause disturbances to the work environment. Because of this effect of earbuds, most teachers would probably like their students to have earbuds instead.
“Most of my teachers really don’t care if we have them in or not. The only thing they really care about is if the music is too loud, and everyone can hear it,” Melaine Clark said.
If teachers don’t care about the issue of students having earbuds in, and they’re the ones teaching, why does the staff care so much for it? When you listen to the news, there are many things people should worry about instead, including staff.
“Yeah, there’s other things they really should be worrying about. There are issues in our school, like threats,” Clark said.
With problems like this and their severity, the school needs to set its priorities straight. Earbuds/headphones shouldn’t be an issue they focus on trying to solve instead of safety protocols and ensuring the safety of the students.
“But yeah, to be fair, it was always like this. The staff has always been hard on students for having their earbuds in, whether we were in the hallways or class. So I guess their priorities have always been this way,” Dean Cantave said.
Having your earbuds/headphones in at school is not a problem our staff should be focusing so heavily on, but it’s the way things have always been. This issue doesn’t seem to change anytime soon, so all we can do is hope our staff puts as much effort into other problems as possible.
