Sept. 15 marked the start of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. This month is important because it celebrates and gives appreciation and attention to the Latino/Hispanic community.

“To me, it is important because it is my culture, and if it weren’t for the (Hispanic/ Latino community) coming over to America, we as Americans would be missing out on a beautiful culture”, said Senior Nicholas Cruz.
Cruz has clearly expressed that he feels it is important to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month not just because of the community but also because of the heritage and culture that it brings over, for example the things that we may see or have in our own houses in our everyday lives.
“I say the culture influences America through music due to Hispanic music being big nowadays and seeing all the work the construction workers put in to build houses are also Hispanic and help build America”, Kevin Flores said.
This also gives a little more light on how Hispanic culture not only brings culture but also puts in hard work to help build this country that they want to call home.
Myles Sanders, a senior, also agrees, stating that he feels that “the Hispanic/Latino heritage influences America in music and art, like the famous Frida Kahlo painting, but more so in music, especially in guitar music.”
During this month, we find ways to celebrate and honor our heritage to show our appreciation for the culture and many other things associated with it.
“When I’m with co-workers or friends we go out to the parades because during this month it makes us feel like we’re back in Mexico because we can enjoy the culture all around,” Nicholas Cruz said.
Although there are ways to celebrate the month outside of school, we as a school should still find ways to show appreciation and bring light to it. “I’m currently in a class where we are making bulletin boards to celebrate Hispanic creators, actors, and artists to sort of feature their history,” Sanders said.
Although these are good ways to celebrate the month, there are still a lot of people in the world, let alone our very own community, who have no clue what Hispanic Heritage Month is or even about. This raises the question of how we can promote the month so that it is more known in our own community.
“We can spread more awareness about it through social media in order to get it out there since our generation is more connected to it,” Flores said.
Social media is a great way to promote the month, and Sanders also agrees, stating that we should postt more about it on social media.
