Crete-Monee High School is back at it again with another remarkably creative spirit week.
Each day of the week, students are encouraged to match a theme to show school spirit.

Crete-Monee seniors celebrate Hassan Hillard and Tay´shaun Russell pose for a picture for
Character Day during Spirit Week.
On Monday, the theme was Class Colors, Tuesday’s theme was Athletes vs Mathletes, Wednesday was Recreate A Picture Day, Thursday was Character Day, and Friday was Surfers vs Bikers.
The interviewees were asked if they liked the spirit week and for ideas for any upcoming spirit weeks. They had a lot to say about the topic at hand.
¨This spirit week was okay; we should do a day where everyone dresses up as old heads,¨ said Freshman Adonys Ferrell, wearing a white tee, beach shorts, and a Hawaiian lei.
Crete-Monee will include multiple spirit weeks in the 2023- 2024 school year. Students are eager to see new ideas.
"I liked this spirit week; it was even better than last year,¨ said Junior Chelsea Daniel, wearing a leather biker jacket with leather bottoms and black leather boots.
On Thursday, lots of students showed up for Character Day. The participants chose their favorite characters and recreated the look.
“The character day had to be the best one; some of the costumes were very creative," said Freshman Sakai Jones
Students think that the next spirit week could be more expressive and that it was great this year, but they feel that they should ask for student opinions for the next spirit week.
“I had fun dressing up for spirit week, but I highly recommend that they let the students choose themes next time,” said Freshman Jakiyah Mack
Many students request opinion polls for the next spirit week; they think student opinions are significant.
¨Maybe next time we should do an opinion box or poll,” said Freshman Briah Gordon.
Spirit Week is supposed to be a fun experience for students to dress how they wouldn't usually dress and have fun while doing it.
They are an essential part of the school year because they can help get people to school, and not every day can a student show up to school with exotic superhero outfits and weird hats.
Showing school spirit does more than show support for the school; it helps the students be more academically and socially engaged.
School spirit weeks allow students to be creative and feel more involved. It is for fun and should be a good enough reason to participate.
Even though while some students enjoyed their homecoming spirit week, some appeared that fewer students participated than they did the year before.
“I feel like last year’s spirit week was more of a success. They should have thrown a throwback day life like they did last year,” said senior Bernie McClain.
“This year, spirit week could have been better; throwback day should have been added,” Timothy Watson said.
Due to not being a throwback day in this year’s spirit week, some students believe the 2022 spirit week was better than the 2023 spirit week.
“This year’s spirit week was a little shaky, a little questionable, but it was cool,” said Eric Rose.
Spirit week is such a big part of homecoming. Students sometimes don’t have the energy to participate like others but always enjoy the activities for everyone.
“I wish that spirit week were more inclusive and everybody participated because there were only a handful of people who dressed up,” said Melanie Clark. “I think it was fun regardless, and it was fun to be out of the ordinary for a week,” Clark said.
Even despite the downside to some parts of this year’s spirit week, it is still always enjoyable because the students have things to laugh about.
“I think the most fun day was character day because even though there weren’t many people who dressed up, it was still fun and made the day less boring,” Clark said.
This first spirit week of the 2023-2024 school year at Crete Monee High School was a success and will hopefully improve as the years go on.
