You could be driving down a road, then BOOM it is all over. In 2016, 10,497 people died from drunk driving, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control). Crete Monee High School students shared their thoughts on drinking and driving.

“I don’t think drinking and driving is okay,” said Casmine Warr. “Too many people lose their lives from other people who decide to get behind the wheel after they have been drinking.”

Casmine just got her license a few months ago and she said she is scared to drive at night because there is likely a chance that somebody could be behind the wheel intoxicated.

“A lot of kids don’t think about the consequences and what could happen if they are driving while drunk,” said Warr.

“So many innocent lives are lost because of the mistakes of others,” said Destiny Rucker. “I think more attention and action should be brought to this situation because it just seems like not enough people are realizing what is going on.”

Most drunk driving accidents are caused by drivers ages 21 to 24, according to bactrack.com. Destiny says that she thinks alcohol should not be sold at certain times in stores to prevent drivers from going on the road intoxicated. If more people ban together and try to make this happen, then there will be a better outcome.

“It doesn’t matter how many times you tell people to stop drinking and drinking, or try to find ways to make sure the situation doesn’t happen because people are still going to do whatever they want,” said Kapiece Thompson.

Kapiece, Casmine, and Destiny all agree that in serious situations like this one everyone should follow the law and not drink and drive. Too many lives are at risk because of the careless acts of those who do not think about their actions. It is time that people find a voice and speak up for others who cannot speak for themselves.
