The girls’ basketball team has been practicing Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays to prepare for the upcoming season. They practice in the school’s field house or gym from 6 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 3:30 to 5:30 on Sundays. They do all kinds of exercises and drills that boost stamina, dribbling, and shooting skills. The coaches push the girls to hustle and work hard to be good athletes.

The girls' basketball team takes a timeout.

Last year’s girls' basketball team was a good but complicated process to work with. The girls were bad at communication and teamwork. Their attitudes were bad, they took it out on each other on the court and on the bus. The girls were good sports to the opposing team but they also acted immature. The team is working on their communication and teamwork on and off the court.

“I feel like the team was kind of immature,” junior varsity and varsity player Sakai Jones said.” We played too much at practice and didn’t really take anything seriously, and when it came to the games, we kind of struggled.”

Because the team was so playful and silly during practices, they were having hard times at games.

Most of the players and students feel like the school should get new jerseys for the team, but some think we shouldn’t. Former basketball players Sakai and Terri Settles suggest that we should get new jerseys because the current jerseys are kind of old and ugly.

“Yes, we should get new jerseys,” Terri Settles said. ¨Their jerseys are old and kind of hard to play in.¨

The girls want to work on their ball handling, stamina, and shooting, so at practices, they do drills like suicides, bear crawls, stair running, ball control, shooting, rebounding, etc.

¨ The exercises and training we do are tough, but they help us train for our games,¨ JV player Iveryelle Phillips said.

Conditioning for the basketball team starts October 8th on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. If you were considering joining the team this year, participating in the conditions could help you prepare for the upcoming season.

In light of this information, this year’s basketball season should be fun, interesting, and exciting at games, knowing the girls have been and are working hard to prepare for what’s coming to them.
