Prom is the highlight of some students’ high school experience. Every year, juniors and seniors look forwards to dressing up and going out with friends or a significant other.
This year’s prom is taking place on May sixth, at the Dream Palace Banquet Hall in Lynwood. The theme is Met Gala, which leaves a pretty open floor for those who decide to follow the theme, although most people don’t.
“It’s okay, but I don’t usually care about the theme,” said Abby Eggers. “It doesn’t really affect what I’m going to wear… I’m just going to wear what I want.”
Why should you go to prom? Some people think that prom is one of the most important parts of the year, while others think that it’s just another day. The excitement for prom grows in the weeks leading up to it, with people talking about their outfits, the venue, the food, who they want to ask, and so much more.
“People should go to prom… it’s a memory that can’t be recreated… You shouldn’t feel like you have to go with a significant other or anyone special, you can go with friends and just enjoy yourself,” said Natalia Barbosa.
But for some people, prom is more than just a fun night. It’s about having one last event with people you’ve known for years and enjoying one of your last high school experiences. It has a completely different environment than a normal school day.
“I think it’s important to go to prom… it’s one of the last social events that you can see people,” said Natalia Barbosa. “Most people look back and say, ‘Why didn’t I go to prom?’ or, ‘I wish I would have gone.’ Even if you don’t end up enjoying it, you went, and you won’t have regrets about not attending.”
For some people though, prom just isn’t all that. Not everyone likes the formal scene, and would rather just stay home.
“The cost is too much… having to buy a ticket, a dress, or a tux… you always have to have flashy things and flowers. I don’t really like that because it’s just not worth it to me,” said Vanessa Perez. “I feel like some people have too high of expectations.”
Even though prom may not be important to everyone, it’s still one last chance to get out and have fun while you’re still a high schooler, and it’s celebratory of the end of the school year.
“It’s a fun night to spend with a date or friends,” said Abby Eggers. “It’s a memory that people should make for the future.”
