Some might not consider Esports an actual sport because you’re not getting sweaty or up and running, but Omar Romo proved that you can bring home a state title, and the only thing you have to do is move your fingers.

In Crete-Monee High School’s second year of participating in Illinois Esports, the team came home with its first state title, and it hopes to win more as the years go by.

“This was my first year trying out, and you know, I made the team,” said Omar.

Omar plays soccer during the fall and he also plays virtual soccer which is called “FC” in his free time.

“I have seen him during open gym in the fall and recruited him. Obviously, he made the team, and once he won the first couple of tournaments, I knew he would be something great,” said Mr. Posey.

Omar says that the environment was great when he went to State. He says it was good how everything lined up.

Omar didn’t face any obstacles throughout his journey. Omar had an impressive year as he was close to gaining the title of being “undefeated.”

The only person who beat Omar in FC is the person he went against in State.

“We would go back and forth. Sometimes he would beat me, and sometimes I would beat him,” Omar said.

When asked if they had a rematch at the moment, would he win? Omar confidently said that he would win, but the match would be close.

With Omar being a junior, he is looking forward to joining the Esports team again next year.

Mr. Posey says with the potential this year. He believes that next year, they can bring another plaque home with FC and in other games such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros (SSB).

Both games fell short in sectionals this year coming into the game with some disadvantages.

On the bright side, the players got to experience what it is like to compete at the next level.

When Mr. Posey was asked how was Omar a good role model he responded with “Omar is a great role model, especially since he has gone and won state. It gives everybody else hope that they can reach that level, too.”

Although everything is great, some things might have to end.

Mr. Posey mentions that Omar is thinking about transferring schools to continue and finish off his high school career in soccer.

Mr. Posey hopes that he doesn’t so Crete-Monee can bring back another trophy.

Omar doesn’t seem like he is going to transfer as when he was being interviewed, his attitude seemed like he is staying here at Crete and is confident about bringing back another plaque.

As the school year ends, that means that the new season is getting closer and closer as the days go on.

The 2024-2025 Crete-Monee tryouts are scheduled to be planned around January as we start the new semester and year off.

But until then, congratulations to Omar, Mr.Posey, and the rest of the esports team on their big accomplishment in such little time.
