School fees are hot topic

Now that the school year is coming to an end, students at Crete are facing many student fee problems.

When students are introduced to the word ¨Student Fees¨, underclassmen may think that student fees only appear in college life, but student fees could appear on your school record. You must manage your student fees during high school and tread lightly on what you are asked to pay for. So what are school fees? School fees may out onto a student who may have owed the school out-of-pocket money due to books that have not been returned or any type of material that was borrowed from the school and has not been returned to the school.

¨I didn’t know that school fees were an actual thing. I thought school fees were just a saying that teachers and the administration say to scare the students into turning in books or other things that the school may have given to a student for them to burrow,¨ said Micah Town.

Another student also shared their point of view on how they felt about student fees and gave an estimated total of how much they owed to the school.

¨ I didn’t know what student fees were. I thought it had something to do with college, but I didn’t think student fees were also mandatory in high school. I only know what student fees are now because my senior friend told me about it and how to check my student fees account, and when I did, I had 20$ in student fees. I was not surprised, but at the same time, I was wondering what I did to have owed the school $20,¨ said Gabriella Mackenzi.

Students also believe that the school should push them more frequently to turn in anything needed for return because sometimes students aren’t aware of fees that are applied to their skyward accounts.

¨ I remember at the end of freshman year, I was never told to turn in any books or supplies, even though I had them. I thought that they were for me to keep because I was never notified to turn them in until my mother told me that I had charges on my Skyward account, and later during sophomore year, I had paid off my student fees,¨ said Linsey Jones.

Furthermore, a class of 2024 student, Mackenzie Lanes, mentioned how she felt about student fees and why she does not have many student fees in her skyward.

¨ I’m glad I do not have to worry about student fees because I learned about them during my freshman year of high school and how to avoid them. I am also glad that the school gives the students until their senior year to pay off the fees because it could be a big obstacle for a student who wants to graduate from high school,¨ said Mackenzie Lanes.
