Students voice concerns over Airbnb hidden cameras

Some owners put secret cameras in Airbnb properties to protect their property. 

“If I saw hidden cameras in my Airbnb rental, it would be really weird cause it would show me that the owner doesn’t trust me in their property, and it would make me feel like my privacy had been violated. The thought of being watched without knowing that I am is kinda weird,” Cayden Williams said.

The answer to the question of whether or not you can sue if a hidden camera is recorded depends on a few factors. If the video was taken in an area with an expectation of privacy, such as a bathroom, then you may be able to file a charge for invasion of privacy.

“I mean, yeah, of course, having secret cameras in Airbnb properties is a clear violation of privacy. Guests have a reasonable expectation of privacy when renting a property and hidden cameras cross that expectation. It’s a lack of trust and an invasion of personal space”. - said Cayden Williams.

No, I wouldn’t feel comfortable staying in an Airbnb if I knew there might be hidden cameras present. The idea of being constantly monitored during what should be a private and relaxing stay is weird ngl. It would make me feel like I couldn’t truly relax and be myself in the space.

Airbnb hosts should take several measures to ensure guests’ privacy and security. Firstly, they should be transparent about any surveillance cameras on the property and obtain guests’ consent before their arrival. Additionally, hosts should regularly inspect the property for any hidden cameras or recording devices. Clear guidelines should be provided regarding the use of surveillance equipment, and hosts should respect guests’ privacy at all times.

“I have had concerns about privacy when staying in an Airbnb. In such instances, I reached out to the host to inquire about any surveillance equipment on the property and asked for reassurance regarding my privacy. Clear communication and transparency from the host helped my concerns.”

There should be clear guidelines outlining when and where surveillance cameras can be installed, as well as requirements for obtaining guests’ consent. The presence of hidden cameras really distracts from the overall experience of staying in an Airbnb. It creates discomfort, preventing guests from fully enjoying their stay. Instead of feeling like a home away from home, the Airbnb rental becomes a place of suspicion.
