On Oct. 26, the Drama Club wrapped up their last performance of the production “She Kills Monsters” with a bang. Audience members agree that the play they saw met their expectations.

“The cast was bringing forth the energy and putting it out there, so I’d say the productions met my expectations,” Junior Akelah Brown said.
After seeing the play, she explained how she enjoyed watching the cast and felt energy from them as they performed.
Similar to Akelah, another member of the audience agrees, saying that after coming to see the show for an entirely different reason, he ended up staying to genuinely enjoy the show.
“I’d give it a solid eight out of ten,” senior Jacques Johnson said. Johnson said that his initial reason for going to see the show was to see his brother, explaining afterward that the play was very funny and met his expectations.
On the subject of humor, audience members also found the production very amusing. One spectator said they found the jokes and some fight scenes entertaining.
“My favorite parts of the play were the fighting scenes because they were funny and interesting,” Junior Nykiah German said.
Though the production included humorous tones, some themes were slightly more mature, with problems and struggles that an older audience could relate to.
“They portrayed sadness and disbelief and siblings arguing and not opening up to one another,” German said.
Staying on the topic of mature themes, Akelah Brown says that the show produced was unlike anything she’d ever seen coming from Drama Club.
“I thought the themes portrayed in the play were different, and I like them differently. For the school to do something like that, it was different.”
Brown said she’d been in the Drama Club previously and watched many of the other shows, but she still hadn’t seen one quite like the production of She Kills Monsters.
With the themes being more mature, audience members expressed that they could relate to certain characters. Jacque’se Johnson said he related to Orcus, the former overlord of the underworld. He explained that he liked Orcus’ characterization, saying that the way the actor portrayed him was entertaining to watch.
Audition for the spring musical will be held after winter break, and audience members are sharing their hopes for the next production.
“Two plays/musicals I would want the school to do would be Descendants and Teen Beach Movie,” Nykiah German said, while Akelah says that she hopes the school would do something similar to The Lorax.
