The CM201u dress code has been revised and many students are unaware. In December of 2023, the school board voted in favor of the revised dress code. There have been no announcements or assemblies regarding the change and students are being left in the dark about this topic.

“I mean the way people dress really shouldn’t affect the way we learn; if it’s affecting you, it’s your fault,” Said sophomore Caedman Vanderhoogt.

Some students have reported that the old dress code was sexist and not being enforced toward males in the school.

“There were ridiculous things that they said girls couldn’t wear such as leggings, yoga leggings, and I feel like that’s sexist because if that was the other way around with a boy, they wouldn’t say anything,” said Freshman Terri Settles.

Administration has not made much effort to explain this change to the student body, only student government and a group chat for the dress code movement that was involved in the change have been kept in the loop.

“I wanna say yeah, they are avoiding the topic because a lot of people are complaining about it. But at the same time, they’ve got a lot of stuff they need to do,” said Vanderhoogt.

Some students were aware of the change, but were clueless as to what the change brings. Students don’t know what the revised dress code says.

“I only know some of what is in the dress code,” said Junior Brenland Sangster.

“I know we can wear crop tops, but that’s pretty much what I know,” said Freshman Taniyah Riddle.

One thing that almost everyone can agree on is that the dress code at school dances should be lenient.

“The dress codes at dances should be lenient,” said Freshman De’Kyla Webb.

Students have been reported saying that all schools should revise their dress codes. The dress code that most schools follow is outdated. The old dress code has not kept up with fashion trends and has primarily targeted women for years.

The old dress code, outlawing crop tops, shorts and skirts above finger-tip length, spaghetti strap tops, and strapless tops,  promotes purity culture and teaches young women and girls to be ashamed of their bodies.

“It was too strict and I think it was BS!” said freshman Terri Settles.

Students were outraged at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year when people were constantly dress-coded. There were long lines wrapped around the school full of girls who had been dress-coded.

“The way people dress has nothing to do with my learning,” said freshman Taniyah Riddle.
