Students react to the Sept. 10 presidential debate

On Sept. 10, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump came together after months of conflict and campaigning to express their plans and arguments in the 2024 presidential debate, which was held at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

“I felt like the debate was unprofessional from both sides due to the fact both parties at certain times within the debate did not wait to hear what the opposing side was going to say, and instead spoke loudly over them, which I thought was unprofessional.” Amro Ghaben said.

As the debate progressed, things got pretty heated. Harris and Trump continuously talked over one another, which came off as unprofessional. One of the fundamental principles of a successful debate is respect. It is crucial to allow your opponent to speak without interruption until their time is up, regardless of any frustration you may feel about the topic at hand.

“I think the moderators did an okay job, but I definitely feel like they were biased for some aspects of the questions,” Ghaben said.

“The moderators did terrible. They only fact-checked Kamala once, while Trump was fact-checked countless amount of times. They kept interrupting and making comments when that is not what a moderator’s job is,” Kevin Flores said

As you can see, a few students have voiced that they believe the moderators were biased and were leaning more towards one side than the other. The job of a moderator is to be a neutral participant during the debate, lead the discussions, & ask appropriate questions. They should avoid showing any bias or favoritism towards any of the participants.

“I believe the abortion topic of this debate was the most controversial,” Ghaben said.

“Abortion was the most controversial topic of the debate because people seemed to be arguing about that portion for days following the debate. It is also just a very touchy topic in general,”  Flores said

Abortion was definitely one of the more controversial topics of this debate. Former President Trump contends that the matter should be delegated to the individual states for determination and would veto a national abortion ban.

Vice President Kamla believes in the protections of Roe v. Wade, which was a Supreme Court case that ruled state laws banning abortions were unconstitutional.

In conclusion, the 2024 presidential debate was certainly one for the books. We have gained insight into each candidate’s presidential agenda and proposed actions upon election. It is now up to America to stay well-informed and decide who to vote for in the upcoming election.

Two out of three presidential debates have been held. Some high school students believe it’s pointless for them to follow politics while others think it’s important for them to know things like this early on so they’ll know more when they're able to vote. The last presidential debate before the election will be held tomorrow on Oct. 1 and the election will be on Nov. 5 Voters in each state will choose one of the candidates and send it to the electoral college to elect a president and a vice president for the next four years.

“The results will definitely affect our future because whoever wins the election has a direct impact on day to day things we need for survival,”August Labranche said. “I didn’t watch the debate but I saw clips and TikTok of it and it made me wanna look into the candidates, and I like Kamala Harris more," Marisa Marbury said.

In 2020 only about 48 percent of people in the U.S. voted. More people should take voting for our next president more seriously, so we can live the best way we possibly can with a person we can look up to make decisions for us to live.

“I believe people who are legally able to vote should vote because it impacts them the most because they are already grown and have to deal with everything the president decides to do," Messiah Warren said.

The former president Donald Trump is planning to make a return to the office, swearing to revive his previous policies back when he was president on immigration, economy, and foreign relations.

“Social media plays a big role because a lot of people are active on their phones and we see everything that goes on and can learn about the candidates at any time. It’s convenient for us to see things about the debate and the election because most of the time our phones are in our faces," Dominic Jackson said.

The presidential election is on Nov 5. It will be the sixtieth election held. Voters in each state will choose a candidate and send it to the electoral college who will then elect the president and vice president for the next four years.

“All I know about the candidates is that Donald Trump served one term before and Kamala Harris served one term but as a vice president. If she wins she will be the first female president of the United States,”Anson Labranche said.
