Tyre Nicholas was twenty-nine years old when five officers severely beat him over a traffic stop. He was hospitalized and died three days later and the public was horrified by the outcome.
Protests are starting to take place. On January 28th, protests occurred in states such as New York City, Chicago, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Portland, Atlanta, San Francisco, Boston, Baltimore, and Newark.
People are outraged by the events. Police brutality has been increasing throughout the years. According to The Washington Post, the striking amount of 1,096 amount of deaths caused by police officers was made in the year 2022.
was the year with the highest amount of deaths caused by police officers.
“I feel like when people have a weapon and certain authority, they aren’t using it for the right reasons,” Jeremiah Hall said.
The five police officers were identified and charged but were on bail. All five officers were fired and aren’t in jail for their crimes.
Now that the officers are going to be on trial, people are dissatisfied with how long it’s taking to get these criminals behind bars.
“This was wrong on many levels, it’s one thing to use force, but to use excessive force on a citizen is ridiculous. Five cops against one person who wasn’t resisting were excessive. Abusing authority is what’s causing these murders,” Celeste Aguilar said.
Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, (a former corrections officer) Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., (a former jailer in Mississippi and Tennessee) Justin Smith, are the cops that were accused of the murder of Tyre Nicholas.
“Police need a military type of training, mentality test to see where these cops are and see where their head is at. I don’t think they need to be defunded but definitely reformed,” Imani Barnette said.
Not only are citizens of America upset with the death of Tyre Nicholas, but the President is appalled by it. President Biden wants to reform the police in America.
“To deliver real change, we must have accountability when law enforcement officers violate their oaths, and we need to build lasting trust between law enforcement, the vast majority of whom wear the badge honorably, and the communities they are sworn to serve and protect,” Biden said. (ABC News)
Since congress is aware of the events and is considering police reform, this leaves Americans to believe a change will come.
