For Chicago Bears fans, hope can turn into heartbreak in a matter of seconds, and the 2026 season has been a perfect example. After an exciting start to the season, the Bears have shown both their potential and their weaknesses, leaving fans wondering which version of the team will show up each Sunday.

The Bears opened their season with an impressive 59-37 victory over the Carolina Panthers, showing off an explosive offense led by quarterback Caleb Williams. However, Williams suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, forcing Chicago to rely on its backup quarterbacks. The Bears lost that game 9-3 before bouncing back with a dominant 27-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Case Keenum stepped up with 247 passing yards and two touchdown passes.

“Caleb Williams getting hurt hindered our offense and put the team at great risk,” George Curly said.

Chicago continued its momentum by defeating the New York Jets 23-12, improving its record to 3-1.  As Caleb Williams slowly recovers, Tyson Bagent has taken over the starting role. Bagent threw for 268 yards against the Jets, helping a lead-balanced offensive performance. However, his next outing was much more difficult. Against the Green Bay Packers on October 11, Bagent threw two interceptions and finished with just 87 passing yards before being replaced by Keenum. Chicago suffered a 31-7 defeat, dropping its record to 3-2.

“They didn’t play to their best potential; if they had gained the motivation to play, it would have been a better outcome,” Roman Johnson said.

The defense has also played an important role in the Bears’ early success. Against Philadelphia, Chicago forced three turnovers and shut out the Eagles in the second half. The defense continued to limit opponents in the victory over New York, allowing only 12 points. However, the loss to Green Bay exposed a weakness in the Chicago Bears' defense that has everyone asking the same question.

The Bears' defense has the potential to become a real strength, but it needs to be more consistent against elite offenses. The players must communicate better, put more pressure on their quarterbacks, and avoid allowing receivers to get open for big plays. If Chicago wants to compete for a playoff spot, its defense must prove it can perform at a high level even when the offense is struggling.

“We need to play more zone defense instead of offense,” Cameron Jones stated.

Overall, the Chicago Bears have the talent to make this season interesting, especially when Williams returns to full health. However, potential alone does not win football games. If the Bears can protect the football, improve their defensive consistency, and build on their early successes, they could become a serious contender. For now, Bears fans have reason to hope, but the team still has to prove it can deliver when the pressure is highest.
