The Crete-Monee football team had a huge win against Thornridge High School Friday night winning 66-0. What makes it even better is it was on their homecoming night.
“All we have to do is play our brand of football, fast, physical, and discipline,” said senior leader Edward Clark.
One big part of the win was the defense stepping up. The Crete-Monee defense had a shutout game allowing no touchdowns. The defense came up big with a pick-six and two safeties.
“We have a really good and disciplined defense. It starts with the leaders of the team. Everybody plays a role and feeds off the others' energy,” said senior captain Brandon Alexander.
The offense had an amazing night scoring in a plethora of different ways. Senior Lynel Billups scored the first play of the game.
“I saw my team had good blocks, so I knew it was up to me to put the ball in the end zone,” said Lynel. “We have a very dominant offensive line and when everything is clicking I feel we are unstoppable.”
Before the game Head Coach John Konecki had some very encouraging words. He said things like “In order to win the game we have to dominate the whole game. All gas, no breaks.”
“The crowd was a huge part of our victory,” said senior captain Joshua Franklin. “This was the most in tune and the loudest crowd I believe we had.”
Wide receiver Lynel Billups gives all glory to his offensive line for the number of points the offense scored this past Friday. He stated that without his offensive line it would be much harder to score.
“I feel like we have the most disciplined and toughest offensive line in the state.”
The Warrior team also put the second team in the game. They finished right where the first team left off scoring two times on the offensive side of the ball.
The Warriors started the season slow losing to a tough Lincoln Way East team and also losing to Andrean High School, but now they are picking up the pace advancing to a positive record of 4-2 beating Thornwood, Thornridge, Thornton, and winning a big statement game to one of the top teams in Illinois Joliet Catholic. They do have a tough opponent coming up this week in Rich Township. The game will be hosted at Rich Township on October 7.
