The Warriors boy’s volleyball team started its very first season this spring. Even though it’s the teams’ first year, they are already onto a good start.

This year the team will play 14 games in the normal season and is made up of players from all grades. Although it’s the team’s first year, they are meeting expectations from themselves.

“My goal for this year is to continue to improve and grow and help my teammates get better for next year so we can do even greater,” said Carlos Zaldarriaga, the team's setter.

So far the team has won four of the eight games they have played, three of them being conference games (as of April 18th).

“The team has met and succeeded in my expectations. Everyone is good at their own thing and all that together has made us pretty good,” said player Jonathon Williams.

Starting the new team has so far been a positive thing, with an average-sized team and a pretty good record. Since this is the school’s first year with a boys’ volleyball team, a portion of the team has had to learn how the game works.

“The team is doing better than I expected… I feel that for our first year, we’re decent and we’re improving,” said Zaldarriaga. “We’re always trying to get better.”

On Monday, April 17th, the team played and won against Bloom High School. With scores of 25-20 and 25-16, the team won two of the three matches played. This game was the team's fourth win of the season.

“We had a lot of fun,” said Williams. “My highlight was probably my assist and my ace, but there were a lot of highlights to the game. I think we played decent. I felt good and enjoyed it; it was a great game.”

However, the referees at this game caused a lot of turmoil between the players. They made some very questionable and wrong calls, which lost the team some points. There were also a few instances where the team was rightfully upset at the calls made, but they still managed to pull through and win.

“I think the team is going pretty well. It’s good that the school is adding new sports,” said Vanessa Perez. “It gives more students opportunities to try new things and find what they’re good at.”

The introduction of new sports is always a positive thing for students. It allows people to have new experiences, and learn new skills. Overall the boy’s volleyball team seems to be a good addition to the Crete Monee sports program.
