Balancing schoolwork, jobs, and personal life is a challenge that affects nearly every student and even their teachers. The struggle to manage time can create stress, impact grades, and test patience.

“Broadcasting teacher and pastor Dorian Mays said, “The biggest challenge I face as a teacher is definitely time management., a teacher and pastor. Mays explained that balancing his responsibilities inside and outside of school has influenced the way he motivates his students. His experience as a pastor also gives him an advantage to help him guide his students for future responsibilities by teaching discipline and independence.

Some students face similar challenges as they attempt to balance academics with club and sport activities. Junior LaRena Coleman shared that school can feel really overwhelming at times, especially when trying to keep grades up. “One of my biggest challenges as a student is maintaining my grades because school can become too much and cause stress,” Coleman said. As a track athlete, she also deals with injuries just like any other athlete. She also feels pressure from both academics and sports.

Everyone ages, and as students get older, their responsibilities do increase, making it harder to manage everything at the same time. Plenty of students must balance schoolwork with jobs, family duties, and social lives. This built-up pressure can affect both mental health and school-related performance.

Senior Montavious Dominguez said that staying organized is one of the biggest difficulties he faces. “Managing constant assignments while balancing work and homework is one of the biggest challenges I face,” Dominguez said. Regardless of these challenges, he actually does enjoy spending time with his friends during lunch as a way to relax and minimize stress during the school day.

Learning how to manage time and responsibilities early can help students prepare for life after high school. Both teachers and students agree that developing balance is an important skill that extends beyond the classroom.

Mays emphasized the importance of independence and responsibility. “Once you’re in the real world, you’re on your own,” he said.

As students prepare for life after high school, learning how to manage time and responsibilities becomes way more important than before. These skills can help reduce stress and create stronger habits that will benefit them in college, careers, and everyday life.
