During the week of Jan. 20, underclassmen’s counselors met with the underclassmen to discuss which classes they wanted to take for the upcoming year. Selecting classes in high school involves reviewing a range of available course options and opportunities.
Choosing the next classes was the topic of discussion. Some students want to pick fun classes, like World Languages and Fine Arts, while others focus on classes they want and need to graduate or to prepare for their future career.
“Choosing your classes is pretty important, because you don't want to take a class that you don't need when you should be taking the class that you need, like taking a language, you shouldn't be taking a random class that doesn't apply to your future,” Diamond Cole said.
To most underclassmen, it really doesn't matter; they want whatever their friends have. However, choosing the right classes early on is important because it can affect grades or GPA, graduation, and how much students enjoy school and their classes.
“You want to enjoy your classes, so I would say pick the right ones. Underclassmen about to choose their classes, be careful. Choose wisely, but pick something related to what you want to do,” Kristina Rice said.
“Very important, you want to enjoy your classes and have them be helpful for your future. You need certain credits to graduate, but you should also be able to take electives you enjoy. Not choosing required classes during the first year or two of high school, then having to take those classes in the senior year. Or taking classes that their friends may be in, but those classes aren't useful for them,” Mrs.Mikal said.
As class selection continues, underclassmen are encouraged to take their time and consider their options beyond just the upcoming school year. The choices they make now can shape their future in high school and open up more opportunities later.
“My advice to any student who isn't sure what classes to take is ask around!.. Ask your teachers for recommendations. Your counselor will have some suggestions about what classes we recommend based on your plans for after high school, but if you aren't quite sure what you want to do, electives are your chance to explore subjects that you might end up loving and may end up helping you determine your future career,” Mrs. Muta said.
