Students united against bullying during Mix-it-Up Spirit Week from Oct. 28 through Nov. 1. The themes focused on bullying awareness; although most students enjoyed the week, some see ways that it could be improved.

Students see the value of spirit weeks and enjoy them for various reasons.

“I think spirit week is a very creative way to have fun in school and enjoy being here,” Estrella Santiago said.

Following the themes is also a way to express yourself with fashion without worrying about judgment.

“I like coming to school dressed up because no one can judge you since it’s for Spirit Week,” Santiago said.

With this particular spirit week, the themes were based on bullying awareness, and students liked this.

“I feel like I’m doing stuff for a good cause. Like spirit week for bullying and awareness—I like doing that. It shows I’m bringing light to something,” Andrea Sherron said.

Although there is lots to love about Spirit Week, students have found some things to dislike.

“I like the fun themes, but the boring themes like ‘do this or that color’—I think that’s kind of boring,” Sherron expressed.

Some students think repeating themes from prior spirit weeks that had a large turnout is one way to get more participation.

“I think seventies day or nineties day is where a lot of people participated,” Sherron realized.

Some students have suggestions to improve spirit weeks that aren’t theme-related.

“‘Who wore it best’ or stuff like that. Have stuff going on where it’s like competition would be cool,” said Ayden Latta.

Although many participate, several attend school during Spirit Week without following the themes.

“I am not participating because I didn’t know about it,” admitted Latta.

Some students think the lack of participation is due to advertisements.

“The only time I ever see it is on Instagram, and a lot of people don’t have Instagram, so I don’t see how everyone is supposed to know about it,” Santiago expressed.

Although there is room for improvement, students should remember the people putting hard work into making this possible for us.

“Kids can complain about it, not knowing how hard it is. Honestly, I used to complain about it when I didn’t coordinate them either, but you don’t know how hard it is to make stuff happen,” Spirit Week coordinator Terrell Henderson expressed.

Regarding advertisement, the coordinators of Spirit Week are doing what they can and trying new types of promotion.

“I think that we try our hardest by putting it on the announcements and Instagram and making promotional videos for it, but some people just don’t see them. We’re trying to come up with something new to promote them. I definitely do think we can find more to promote it, but we do try,” Henderson admitted.
