They hardly noticed the hot lights beaming down on them as they danced across the risers, singing with everything they had Show choir, a fine arts group that dances and sings. While experiencing new opportunities for musicality and fun, a solid familial bond is created among everyone in the group.

Not only is the main performance important, but solo competition is also a very anticipated part of competing.

“I think part of our group is really good choreographically, and part of our group is really good vocally, and as I said, there’s some that are good at both, so it’s really about how that puzzle goes together,” said Head Director Robert Mohr.

The members have three-hour practices twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-8:30. There is also a one-week camp in the summer where the Cavaliers learn all of their dances.

Choreography is a fundamental part of show choir, and every move must be done precisely and at the correct times.

“Everybody has their days. I just like that I’m able to help everyone who needs help and anybody who’s questioning what they’re doing,” says Dance Captain Katie Johnson.

The 2023-2024 show choir season is just starting, but The Cavaliers are confident they will bring home many first-place trophies this season.

“We got grand champs my sophomore year and my junior year, so we’re definitely getting grand champs this year because we’re better. We get better every year,” Dance Captain Rhyen Robinson says.

As the Cavaliers prepare for their upcoming concerts in October and December, vocals are the main focus.

“I think the two upcoming concerts are going to go very well. We have a lot of hard, diligent workers,” said Assistant Director Ben Alifantis. “And I think they know when it’s going to be crunch time, and so by the time we get to that point, I think we’ll really step up and be the best that we can be.”

The show choir veterans have a lot of special memories in this group, and they provide a lot of insight into what the show choir community is really like.

“My favorite thing about show choir is the fact that we’re like a family,” Kurstin Smith said.

“Even though obviously with a group that big, you’re gonna have a lot of different friend groups, when it comes down to it, I feel like I can still depend on anybody in that group.”

There is such a strong bond with the Cavaliers that even the graduated Cavaliers visit and stay in touch with everyone.

“I love the performance of show choir. It is incredible to form a show, work on it, perfect it, and perform it on stage. It gives such a high, and I loved that!” said Alumnus Christopher Smith.
